Deputy Prime Minister for Science, Research and Innovation Pavel Bělobrádek visited the ELI Beamlines International Laser Center on Thursday, June 8, 2017. The unique L3 laser system, the most expensive of all four laser systems in the project developed by the prestigious Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), has arrived. It is a pumping laser used for develop compact particle accelerators for medical applications or to examine the internal structure of living cells.
The Academy of Sciences's Physics Institute, which runs the project, has collaborated on developing this unique laser with the National American LLNL for more than three years. In the next twelve months, the Czech-American team will be building and integrating it with the central control system. Gradually, its output will be increased to a full projected value, with the peak output over 1 PW - petawatt (million billion watts). Thanks to this output makes this laser one with the highest output in the world.
