100 years of Czechoslovakia: The Czechs really have something to be proud of. Commentary by Member of the European Parliament Pavel Svoboda

At the occasion of birthdays, especially jubilee ones, it is good manners to wish all the best. I would like to wish to the Czech Republic, so to all of us, to realize a couple of things.

We have something to be proud of. We really should celebrate. Since the beginning we have been a successful industrial country. The first republic brand Made in Czechoslovakia has been famous till today. A hundred years ago, we were the only democratic state among its neighbours. In the cultural sphere, we have influenced Europe at many levels, whether in the fields of music, architecture or literature. Pride in the heritage of the past shall lead us to self-confidence, which leads to patriotism. Patriotism, if we do not allow it to degenerate into blind nationalism and rudeness, will make us strong and comprehensible partners to the rest of Europe.
