Former Minister of Agriculture Marian Jurečka elected as the new Chairman of KDU-ČSL

On Saturday 25 January 2020 former Minister of Agriculture (2014 - 2017) Marian Jurečka was elected as the new Chairman of KDU-ČSL getting 205 of 360 votes. The extraordinary KDU-ČSL Congress held in Prague followed after a resignation of Marek Výborný for family reasons at the end of 2019.

The other candidate, Chairman of the KDU-ČSL Group in the Chamber of Deputies, Jan Bartošek took second place with 142 votes. Tomáš Zdechovský, Member of the European Parliament, finally announced not to run for the highest post preferring to be a Vice-Chairman, that he was successfully elected. The position of the First Vice-Chairwoman was retained by Šárka Jelínková, Member of the Senate. The KDU-ČSL Leadership further consists of Jan Bartošek, Petr Hladík, Ondřej Benešík covering all levels of politics from the communal up to the European level.

“Let’s build together a better society for our children,” appealed Marian Jurečka in his first speech in the role of Chairman also expressing his thanks to his running mates. He further stressed the importance of a responsible climate policy and pointed out that accessible housing and pension reform beneficial for parents will be his key priorities.

During his first official press conference Jurečka set the goal of gaining more than 500 000 additional votes in the next parliamentary election in 2021. “I am glad that we effectively managed the whole Congress and succeeded to have a strong team in the KDU-ČSL leadership including experienced members as well as highly skilled newcomers. There is a guaranteed continuity, but there is also a new combination of experience, seniority and new drive,” commented Jurečka on the Congress and the new composition of the KDU-ČSL Board.
