Ostrava, April 24, 2026: Delegates at the KDU-ČSL Congress in Ostrava today decided on a major overhaul of the party. Jan Grolich was elected to lead the Christian Democrats, receiving a strong mandate from the delegates and unveiling the KDU-ČSL’s new visual identity. Incumbent MP Benjamin Činčila was elected First Deputy President. The Board was further supplemented by Deputy Presidents Monika Brzesková, Libuše Hubáčková, František Talíř, and Václav Pláteník. Under its new leadership, the party presents a vision of a modern, capable, and self-confident force that wants to actively shape the direction of the Czech Republic. At the same time, the new website Noví lidovci was launched.
In his speech, newly elected President Jan Grolich emphasized that the party must stop focusing on outdated internal disputes and instead concentrate on the real problems facing citizens. “The Czech Republic needs a force that is grounded in values, operates in a modern way, and is capable of addressing the greatest challenges we face. We are that force. The People’s Party. We are drawing a thick black line under petty ambitions, because we want to govern our country and not constantly worry about how to clear the five-percent threshold. We are drawing a thick black line under moral judgments and meddling in people’s lives. Because we must have respect and empathy for people and solve their problems. “I don’t want politics that shifts with the wind, but the courage to do responsible—even if unpopular—things,” Jan Grolich said in his speech.
Grolich’s right-hand man in the role of First Deputy President will be MP Benjamin Činčila, who was supported by 239 delegates. “I grew up in a large family where it was a given that one bears responsibility. Not just for oneself, for the family, but also for what one leaves behind. It is precisely these values that brought me to the KDU-ČSL,” he said in his opening remarks.
The First Deputy President aims to strengthen the party’s economic policy and support families. “I want the KDU-ČSL to have an economic backbone as strong as its social heart. Work must pay off, especially for families. That is why, for example, I want lower taxes on labor for people who work and raise children. Not more complicated benefits—but a fair system where families aren’t punished for existing. And people must not be forced to choose between family and career. This isn’t just a social issue. It’s an economic issue for the future of this country,” added Benjamin Činčila.
The new leadership is committed to openness and teamwork. Libuše Hubáčková, who brings experience from Pilsen municipal politics to the leadership, compared political efforts to sports: “You may know that I’m a city councilor in Pilsen, but you probably don’t know that I used to play soccer. In soccer, there’s a simple rule: if everyone starts playing for themselves, the team loses, and when you concede a goal, you don’t ask who’s to blame, but how to turn it around. Perhaps we could remind ourselves of this rule from time to time, and that’s exactly the kind of politics we should be practicing,” said newly elected Deputy President Libuše Hubáčková.
František Talíř would like to focus on the party’s internal operations: “My vision is of an open, functional, and very well-organized party in which every member can fully develop their unique gifts and use them to change the world around them for the better,” František Talíř said in his speech.
Monika Brzesková highlighted the role of women in politics: “We are a party of values that make sense and are needed in today’s uncertain times. On this foundation, we can build a modern, open, and strong political movement that will truly resonate with people. “I want the People’s Party to be a party where women can have the space to grow, assert themselves, and help shape the direction of national politics. A party where young women find inspiration and where experienced female politicians receive the respect they deserve,” added Monika Brzesková, who successfully defended her position as party Deputy President today.
Václav Pláteník also retained his seat, recalling the legacy of Josef Lux and the need to defend freedom in the digital age: “In 1997, Josef Lux said in one of his speeches that the goal of our politics is an orderly world in which free people live, united by mutual solidarity. I was born in freedom, and I will do everything I can to ensure that I can live my entire life in it, just as my children will. Our people want to vote for a successful, values-based party that will address practical issues. I want to work for such a party, I want to serve these people, and together with you, I want to make the KDU-ČSL a success,” said Václav Pláteník.
