Antonio Tajani (EPP, IT) won Parliament’s presidential election with 351 votes in a final face-off with Gianni Pittella (S&D, IT), who secured 282 votes.

EU-Turkey relations: “We are entering a new phase”
More than 10 years after EU-Turkey accession talks started, MEPs adopted a resolution on 24 November calling for the negotiations to be suspended until the Turkish government ended its disproportionate and repressive response to July's failed coup. Ankara replied by threatening to let thousands of migrants pass through to Europe. Greek EPP member Manolis Kefalogiannis, head of Parliament’s delegation to Turkey, commented: “We are entering a new phase in EU-Turkey relations”.

The European Union steps up support for victims of deadly hurricane Matthew
The EU is providing civil protection expertise, extra humanitarian aid and in-kind assistance to Haiti following deadly hurricane Matthew.The European Commission is stepping up its support with a further €1.5 million in emergency aid for those most affected by hurricane Matthew in Haiti to cover immediate basic needs. The funding comes in addition to the initial EU humanitarian assistance of €255 000 announced yesterday.
